WORKSHOPS

A Song Celebrating Friendship

This was a particularly special songwriting workshop.

They are all special. But something about this song reaches deep to the bones and truly uplifts the spirit.

“Bright Light” was written by twenty talented children of the Biigtigong Nishnaabeg First Nation, in Ontario Canada. During our stay in the area, we were enchanted by the beauty of Lake Superior’s North Shore.

While we were painting the mural in Marathon, we heard that there would be a powwow at the nearby Biigtigong Nishnaabeg First Nation. We knew we had to go. It was a beautiful celebration, and we felt very honored to be welcomed in to witness.

As the mural project came to a close, we decided to contact the Biigtigong Nishnaabeg community to see if there would be interest in a songwriting workshop. The idea was well received, so off we went!

The songwriting workshop was a two-day affair, with twenty children from the community participating. The song was a collaboration between all age groups, six years to thirteen years. The little ones wrote the chords, while the big kids wrote the lyrics and melody.

What came out of the workshop is absolutely marvelous. A song with deep meaning and such potent wisdom. Children really are the wisest among us. We must listen, honor, and amplify their voices.

Thank you to the Biigtigong Nishnaabeg First Nation for welcoming us to your beautiful corner of the world.
