{"id":3111,"date":"2019-02-17T02:08:52","date_gmt":"2019-02-17T02:08:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artwethereyet.com\/blog\/?p=3111"},"modified":"2022-03-11T06:03:13","modified_gmt":"2022-03-11T12:03:13","slug":"removal-school-bus-ac-air-conditioning-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artwethereyet.com\/blog\/removal-school-bus-ac-air-conditioning-system\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Remove a Bus A\/C System"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"p1\">To remove a school bus AC system is no joke.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>Before you take this on, really make sure you want to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">Are your AC units fully functioning?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>Are they too bulky and that\u2019s the only reason you\u2019re taking them out?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>If so, keep in mind that it is <em>nice<\/em> to have AC while you\u2019re driving in hot places.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>Having the original bus AC won\u2019t interfere with a mini-split or roof-top unit you install for keeping you cool while parked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">If you are determined to take your bus\u2019 original AC units out, know this\u2026you can sell them!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>No kidding.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>Two perfectly functioning bus AC units can fetch $2000.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>We had two Carrier units, one with a broken compressor and the other blowing cold.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>We sold them both (compressors, tubes, and fans included) for $750, and that was a steal for the buyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">So, if you are still ready to embark upon removing those old AC units, read on\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"video-container\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VAC47eb-Mjk\" width=\"760\" height=\"415\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"p1 wp-block-heading\">Tools &amp; Material Required to Remove a Bus AC:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"ul1 wp-block-list\"><li>A socket wrench kit.  Honestly, we recommend you just buy a kit <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3JVHbIv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">like this<\/a> right at the start of your conversion.  You&#8217;ll use just about every tool in here, many times over.  And this saves you from spending more money and time buying them piecemeal.  <\/li><li>An impact Driver (we got this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B01DQ19AP0\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B01DQ19AP0&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=artwethereyet-20&amp;linkId=a87e79b308b32e866c80823edad85fad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">impact driver\/drill combo kit<\/a>&nbsp;which served us well through the whole conversion!)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3IoHrQ3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Duct tape<\/a> (the good stuff, don&#8217;t waste your money on the crappy stuff)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3sYZfdW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Safety glasse<\/a>s and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/33OkYwR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gloves<\/a><\/li><li>Baggies and a sharpie<\/li><li>A big piece of cardboard or a tarp to cushion your back when you are working under the bus<\/li><li>A good friend who doesn\u2019t mind getting <i>really<\/i> dirty<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Full disclosure guys, some of these are affiliate links, so we get a commission if you buy something from the list.\u00a0 As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.\u00a0 Not much, but something.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>This is really important<\/strong>: we\u00a0<em><strong>only<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0link to tools and materials we actually used and\u00a0highly\u00a0recommend. We do these guides completely for free, so these links are the only way we get a little something back (except for the satisfaction of knowing we helped\u00a0<em>you<\/em>\u00a0build your dream skoolie, of course!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t have Amazon Prime yet?\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/tryprimefree?ref_=assoc_tag_ph_1427739975520&amp;_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=pf4&amp;tag=artwethereyet-20&amp;linkId=74f461080ddf921de48118000bf197db\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Here\u2019s a link for 30 days free.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"p1 wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Evacuate the freon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3\">Find a company that can safely evacuate the freon from the AC system.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>Your best bet is to call your local A\/C repair service and ask them if they offer freon evacuation services.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>If not, ask them who they can recommend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"p1 wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Dismount the inside evaporators (blower units)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">We show the process of dismounting the inside units here in <a href=\"http:\/\/artwethereyet.com\/blog\/2019\/01\/15\/remove-ceiling-panels-school-bus-conversion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this video<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>Essentially, it involves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"ol1 wp-block-list\"><li class=\"li1\">Removing the unit covering (keep those screws and screw caps in a clearly labelled baggie, so your buyer can re-assemble without a hassle).<\/li><li class=\"li1\">You\u2019ll see that the unit is fastened to the ceiling with four heavy-duty bolts.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>Slowly lower the nuts on the bolts, bringing the units down with them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>You\u2019ll need two people doing this at the same time (even better to have a third person holding and spotting the AC unit as it\u2019s coming down).<\/li><li class=\"li1\">When the bolts are out, carefully lower the unit to the floor.<\/li><li class=\"li1\">Put the bolts into a baggie and mark them clearly, so the buyer knows what is what.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"p1 wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Disconnect the hoses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It&#8217;s very important to wear safety gloves and glasses for this part!<\/li><li>Unscrew the hose clamps and fully disconnect the hoses, starting at the inside evaporators (the bulky pieces that are inside the bus).&nbsp; THE FREON MUST BE EVACUATED FIRST!<\/li><li>Remove the hoses by following them from the inside evaporators through the floor\/walls, to under the bus, to the engine compressors, and to the condensers.&nbsp; You&#8217;ll have to work under the bus pulling the hoses out, so have something to lay on under there and wear safety glasses because&nbsp;<em>a lot&nbsp;<\/em>of dirt and gunk is going to fall all over your face when you&#8217;re pulling the hoses out.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4: Remove the compressors from the engine<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The compressors are bolted into the engine.&nbsp; Remove them using a socket wrench and some serious muscle.<\/li><li>When the compressors come loose and are removed, the belt will slacken and you&#8217;ll be able to remove it.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 5: Remove the condensers and electrical board from underneath the bus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In our bus, the condensers were mounted up underneath the bus with a grid for the fans to access air through.&nbsp; Unmount them just as you did the evaporators.<\/li><li>The electrical for our AC units was in a built-in box next to the battery box.&nbsp; Remove the whole system completely.&nbsp; If you&#8217;re unsure about any part of this step, it&#8217;s best to have someone with you who knows AC systems and\/or electrical.&nbsp; Just to be safe!&nbsp; And if you&#8217;re curious about the details, give us a shout at connect@artwethereyet.com and we&#8217;ll walk you through it!<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And that&#8217;s that!  <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your old AC system is now gone (hopefully you got a few bucks for it), and you&#8217;re ready for the next step in your conversion (for us it was <a href=\"https:\/\/artwethereyet.com\/blog\/installing-propane-tank-skoolie-conversion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">installing the propane tank<\/a>).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And on that topic &#8211; <em>good news!
