{"id":3194,"date":"2019-12-01T05:47:06","date_gmt":"2019-12-01T11:47:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artwethereyet.com\/blog\/?p=3194"},"modified":"2022-04-23T19:53:17","modified_gmt":"2022-04-24T00:53:17","slug":"sensory-path-tanglewood-middle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artwethereyet.com\/blog\/sensory-path-tanglewood-middle\/","title":{"rendered":"A Sensory Path Celebrating Mindfulness"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The outdoor Sensory Path at Tanglewood Middle School was an amazing project for us to be a part of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"video-container\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r1HcPa-vBzw\" width=\"760\" height=\"415\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a sensory path?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>A sensory path is an invaluable tool for any school community.&nbsp; It is an interactive pathway, utilizing movement and varied sensory input (such as different shapes and colors), to engage and refocus a child.&nbsp; When over-stimulation and stress lead to a decrease in cognitive functioning, sensory paths are shown to help provide the sensory input that then allows the child to return to the classroom and re-center on cognitive learning.&nbsp; They also help build motor skills and spatial awareness, helping build the sensory pathways of the brain.&nbsp; More <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/long-island\/education\/sensory-path-special-education-william-floyd-learning-center-1.32585668\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">They are also a whole heck-of-a-lotta fun!<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Weaving in and out of one another, the four paths that make up this one piece, can be used solo or in teams.&nbsp; You can imagine the fun that ensues when four students compete to reach the finish line!&nbsp; Even Jos\u00e9 and I couldn&#8217;t resist. Once the paint was thoroughly dried, we promptly raced each other!&nbsp; (I won).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The path was the brainchild of Maureen Phend, an amazing educator at the school, who is one of those teachers that just is above and beyond.&nbsp; She had the idea to take the school&#8217;s existing pavers and turn them into the path.&nbsp; A few weeks after our departure from Tanglewood, she sent us these photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She took groups of students out to use the path.&nbsp; Then later she had them unexpectedly draw the path from memory.&nbsp; The detail in their recollection is amazing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-4 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul \/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mindful Moment<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll see that the path also incorporates something different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Jos\u00e9 and I first got to Tanglewood, we were so impressed to witness a practice the entire middle school has taken on together.&nbsp; At the beginning and end of every school day, the whole school practices the Mindful Moment together.&nbsp; Over the announcements, teachers are asked to lower their classroom lights.&nbsp; Everyone becomes still.&nbsp; And the announcements lead everyone through a simple meditation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Relax<\/strong>.&nbsp; Let the worries from home and from life fade away.<\/li><li><strong>Focus.<\/strong>&nbsp; Focus on the here and now, on how you feel, on feeling great and excited for the day.<\/li><li><strong>Inhale.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>Feel the breath coming in and filling you with energy.<\/li><li><strong>Exhale.<\/strong>&nbsp; Feel your worries fall away with your breath.<\/li><li><strong>Smile.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>Smile and have a great day!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We were prepping the wall for the first <a href=\"http:\/\/artwethereyet.com\/blog\/2019\/09\/20\/tanglewood-middle-school-art-yet-mural\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tanglewood mural<\/a> when Jos\u00e9 and I first witnessed the Mindful Moment.&nbsp; We looked at each other and just said, &#8220;Wow!&nbsp; That is really something.&nbsp; <em>Everyone<\/em> could benefit from building this into the beginning and end of every day!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It worked perfectly that the pavers had this long &#8220;tail&#8221; of individual pavers stretching away from the grid.&nbsp; There were just enough to fit&nbsp;<strong>relax, focus, inhale, exhale,&nbsp;<\/strong>and&nbsp;<strong>smile<\/strong>.&nbsp; So we incorporated them in.&nbsp; And it couldn&#8217;t have worked out better, because it serves as the perfect way to &#8220;enter&#8221; into the sensory pathway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>We are so grateful to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenville.k12.sc.us\/twood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tanglewood Middle<\/a> for having us.\u00a0 We know they feel we gave a lot to them.\u00a0 But truthfully, we feel they gave us more.\u00a0 To hear the kids get so excited about the murals, and to feel such ownership in them&#8230;that gave us a burst of affirmation and energy that we so needed right at the onset of this journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image
