The region&#8217;s landscape, traditional music, and community.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"video-container\"><iframe width=\"760\" height=\"415\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rvim8zRj3xM\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Painting the school mural at Alleghany JAM was truly a community effort.  Watching the video, you can see the many hands that came together to bring it together.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students, Arts Council members, JAM Board Members, community members, and yours truly!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Elements of the school mural at Alleghany JAM<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Appalachian landscape.  <\/strong>The mural begins with the beautiful Appalachian landscape of Alleghany County.  The Blue Ridge Parkway is just a stone&#8217;s throw away! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Instruments of the region&#8217;s traditional old-time music.<\/strong>  The mission of Alleghany JAM is to keep old-time music alive, by providing lessons to the area&#8217;s youth along with community coffeehouse jams.  This instrument design was inspired by the JAM logo designed by Kate Irwin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tribute to JAM&#8217;s founder.  <\/strong>Finally, the school mural weaves in a tribute to JAM founder, Helen White.  Helen sadly passed just days before our arrival.  Helen shows us all the impact one person can have on the lives of many.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/artwethereyet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/painting-school-mural-alleghany-jam.jpg\" alt=\"school mural alleghany jam art we there yet\" class=\"wp-image-3345\" width=\"757\" height=\"568\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Alleghany JAM<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Alleghany JAM (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/alleghanyjam.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alleghany JAM<\/a> is an after-school program for children in Alleghany County, North Carolina.  It gives children lessons and immersion in the old-time music of the region.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alleghany JAM was our gracious host, allowing us to park the bus&nbsp;for over a week! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1080\" src=\"http:\/\/artwethereyet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/art-we-there-yet-school-mural-painting.jpg\" alt=\"painting school mural art we there yet\" class=\"wp-image-3346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/artwethereyet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/art-we-there-yet-school-mural-painting.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/artwethereyet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/art-we-there-yet-school-mural-painting-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alleghany Arts Council<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Our time in Sparta, NC was truly special. Our welcome was second to none, the hospitality and kindness so humbling and inspiring.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alleghanyartscouncil.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Alleghany Arts Council  (opens in a new tab)\">Alleghany Arts Council <\/a>was our family, working tirelessly to arrange logistics, paint for days on end, and make us feel so beautifully at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Arts Council sponsored the paint for this mural, and the council made a generous $1000 dollar donation to the Art We There Yet project just before our departure from Sparta.
