{"id":4051,"date":"2020-03-06T16:03:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-06T22:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artwethereyet.com\/blog\/?p=4051"},"modified":"2022-01-09T13:07:40","modified_gmt":"2022-01-09T19:07:40","slug":"appalachian-folk-song-ethan-pardue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artwethereyet.com\/blog\/appalachian-folk-song-ethan-pardue\/","title":{"rendered":"A Song from Ethan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We crossed paths with Ethan in Sparta, North Carolina.\u00a0 He participated in my <a href=\"https:\/\/artwethereyet.com\/blog\/art-music-workshops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"songwriting workshop (opens in a new tab)\">songwriting workshop<\/a> with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Alleghany JAM (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/alleghanyjam.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alleghany JAM<\/a>.\u00a0 We also often heard him playing his guitar outside the JAM House during our time there. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ethan is young &#8211; still in high school &#8211; and his passion for music shines clear.\u00a0 Another student told me that outside of school, Ethan is rarely seen without his guitar. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After his recording session I asked him, \u201cWhy do you love music?\u201d  He replied:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><div class=\"penci-pullqoute align-none\"><blockquote>It\u2019s calming.\u00a0 It makes me happy and keeps me calm.\u00a0 When I lay down in bed at night, I put my earbuds in and just lay there and listen.<\/blockquote><\/div><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"video-container\"><iframe width=\"760\" height=\"415\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OV57Yhgo0yY\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Appalachian folks songs and carrying forward tradition<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is Ethan singing \u201cMountain Dew\u201d, a tune originally penned by Bascom Lamar Lunsford and later adapted by Scotty Wiseman.\u00a0 It is now considered a standard Appalachian folk song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s quite beautiful that so many young people in Alleghany County are connecting with the traditional folk music of the region.\u00a0 It is important that young people across the globe carry forward the art forms of their place in the world.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only then can we maintain the reach tapestry of musical genres we see throughout our world today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alleghany JAM<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Alleghany JAM is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Appalachian Heritage by enriching the lives of youth in our community through\u00a0traditional\u00a0music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> JAM encourages a sense of belonging both through\u00a0offering opportunities for students to play traditional music with others, and\u00a0through activities that foster an appreciation for their ancestors and place in\u00a0history.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its inception, over 1200 students have participated in Alleghany\u00a0JAM, and it has become a well-respected entity within and beyond Alleghany County.\u00a0 Today it serves students in grades 3-8 teaching classes in guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, bass, dulcimer, dancing, and singing.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We crossed paths with Ethan in Sparta, North Carolina.\u00a0 He participated in my songwriting workshop with Alleghany JAM.\u00a0 We also often heard him playing his guitar outside the JAM House during our&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":4054,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[49],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4051","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-music"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>A Song from Ethan | Art We There Yet<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Ethan Pardue singing &quot;Good Ole Mountain Dew&quot;, an Appalachian folk song.
