Our visit to Gadsden, Alabama was unplanned and wonderful!
A week earlier, we had finished up week in New Market, Alabama where we painted a mural. We didn’t plan to have any more stops for the rest of the year.
But while we were driving through the area, one of our posts went viral in the region. It was seen by Amy, who works at Ray Thompson Elementary in Gadsden, Alabama.
Amy sent us a message on Facebook. “I know it’s a long-shot, but any chance you can come to Ray Thompson?” “You bet!” we replied.
A few days, we arrived in Gadsden and spent a full day at Ray Thompson Elementary. José conducted back-to-back painting workshops, while I circulated through classrooms doing mini-songwriting workshops. It was a jam-packed and wonderful day!
One thing we are learning through the Art We There Yet project…one thing always leads to the next, and you never where the path may turn next!
We never would have passed through Gadsden if Amy had not contacted us. Because we came through town, we met Arnold Montgomery and a new collaboration and friendship was born.
While in Gadsden, we went out to listen to Tuesday night jazz, and there was Arnold playing with his group. WOW! What unfolded next is a story in and of itself. You can read the full story here.
Art We There Yet partners with schools, non-profits, local arts councils, and community arts centers to provide two free workshops in communities experiencing a lack of arts education programs. Our volunteering workshops are free to participants and there is no fee to the hosting partner.
Workshop sponsors help us cover the cost providing these workshops free of charge in communities that need it the most. If you are interested in sponsoring a workshop, click here.
