There are only two recordings of me and Dave performing this song together. The first from the night we wrote it, sixteen years ago.
And this one.
A Song of the Past
A song of the past indeed.
I first starting traveling to Nashville when I was fourteen. My choir teacher, Peter Engh, put me in contact with a management team in Nashville. A few months later, I signed on with Dennis Management & Matt Timm Music under an artist development contract.
Step one was to get to writing! Sharon and Matt set up many co-writing sessions, and one of them happened to be with Dave Brainard.
Dave is a world-class producer, and at the time he was writing with a publishing company and also producing album and demo projects on the side.
We got together one evening, and “What Your Love Is Doing” just flowed out. It was a stormy night, perhaps that aided in the flow?
Dave could produce demos fast, so we recorded a quick demo then and there. Well, I ended up loving it so much, that it made its way to the album Turn The World without ever being re-recorded!
Fast forward sixteen years. Dave is now a grammy-nominated producer who has worked with some of the best in country music. Me, well, I’m a lady in a bus with as lofty dreams as ever!
José and I made a drive-by through Nashville on the Art We There Yet journey. We met up with old friends, made some new ones, and soaked up a bit of Nashville.
And Dave and I met up to record “What Your Love Is Doing” for the first time since that blustery night in 2003.
